International Volunteers at TTHA
Welcoming Our New International Volunteers to TTHA
At Tabulam and Templer Homes for the Aged (TTHA), we celebrate the richness that comes from cultural diversity and are proud of our German heritage. A unique and exciting program that reflects this is our International Volunteers (IVs) program. This year, we are thrilled to introduce Aylin, Mathilde, Kiki, Anabel, Moritz, and Jost – six young and energetic individuals who have travelled from Germany to contribute their skills, passion, and enthusiasm to TTHA’s community.
International Volunteer Opportunities in Aged Care
TTHA has partnered with renowned organizations such as Verein für internationalen und interkulturellen Austausch (VIA e.V.) and Evangelische Freiwilligendienste gGmbH (Das Diakonische Jahr im Ausland, DJiA). These partnerships have brought us passionate young volunteers who engage directly with our residents, particularly in the areas of Activities and Engagement. The program is designed to foster meaningful cultural exchange and personal growth while providing invaluable support to our residents, their families, and our staff.
These German volunteers bring not only their language and culture but also their youthful energy, curiosity, and creativity. Whether they are leading a lively group activity, lending a compassionate ear, or sharing stories from their homeland, they make a positive impact daily. Their contributions extend beyond practical help – they offer emotional support, companionship, and a fresh perspective that enriches the lives of everyone at TTHA.
Programs Supporting International Volunteers
Our volunteers are part of a broader international program offered by DJiA, which has decades of experience in running educational and personal development-oriented services. Each year, around 14,000 young adults are placed in voluntary service programs both within Germany and internationally. These programs emphasise self-determination, tolerance, respect, and the dignity of each individual, principles that align with TTHA’s values.
VIA e.V., a non-profit organization founded in 1992, also shares this mission of bridging cultures through volunteer placements. They focus on promoting diversity, intercultural understanding, and global solidarity. Volunteers from both organisations bring these values to TTHA, helping to build a diverse and welcoming community that celebrates inclusion and mutual respect.
German Volunteers in Australia
For the young German volunteers, the experience at TTHA offers tremendous personal growth and learning opportunities. Volunteering in a different cultural environment helps them improve their social and interpersonal skills as they engage with people from diverse backgrounds, including staff, residents, and their families. They gain valuable insights into intergenerational learning, understanding the unique perspectives and stories of older adults while sharing their own youthful outlook. Exposure to different beliefs, customs, and traditions deepens their appreciation for cultural diversity, fostering tolerance and empathy, resulting in an experience that not only broadens their worldview but also equips them with life skills that will benefit them in their future personal and professional endeavours.
We are deeply grateful for the dedication of Aylin, Mathilde, Kiki, Anabel, Moritz, and Jost and look forward to witnessing as their presence enhances the quality of life for our residents, bringing joy, comfort, and a sense of connection to the world beyond our walls. As we welcome these volunteers, we also honour the collaborative efforts of the organisations that make their involvement possible, fostering an exchange of knowledge, culture, and compassion that benefits all involved.
