The friendship of Landy & Iris
At 101 years old, Iris is an incredibly dignified woman with a sharp sense of humour and a lifelong love of community. Having been heavily involved in the Country Women’s Association for many years, she fondly reflects on her time there. When asked whether she spent those years baking cakes, Iris laughed and replied that she much preferred eating them, a testament to her well-known sweet tooth.
Today, one of the highlights of her week is spending time with her friend Landy.
Why Volunteering in Aged Care Matters for Residents and Volunteers
Landy has been part of the TTHA community for many years, with both her late mother-in-law and her father-in-law, who is currently a resident, having been connected to the facility. After attending the Carers Christmas event in December and hearing about the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme, she felt inspired to get involved. Already visiting regularly with her husband to see her father-in-law, Landy recognised that she could also make a difference to other residents who may not receive frequent visitors.
After completing her onboarding, Landy was matched with Iris, a pairing thoughtfully made based on their shared South African cultural background. What has followed has been a truly special connection.
In a short space of time, staff have noticed a remarkable change in Iris. She has become more social, eagerly anticipating Landy’s visits each week. She even asked staff to help her create a birthday card for her friend, whom she affectionately calls “Landy Pandy.” Those small but meaningful gestures speak volumes about the bond they now share.
There is also something quietly powerful in the way Iris carries herself when Landy is by her side. Staff often remark that she seems to sit a little taller, her posture reflecting a renewed sense of confidence, connection, and joy.
A Shared Cultural Connection That Sparked a Beautiful Friendship
Their visits are filled with laughter, storytelling, and shared moments over South African treats that Landy brings are always accompanied by Iris’s mandatory cup of tea. The warmth between them is unmistakable, and their laughter frequently spreads throughout the room, bringing smiles not only to each other but to staff and other residents as well.
The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme continues to create meaningful connections like this one, enriching the lives of residents and volunteers alike. For Iris and Landy, what began as a simple introduction has grown into a friendship that brings genuine joy, companionship, and a sense of belonging.
